| Poultry, Eggs, Pork Safe for Human Consumption |
Following reports last week that millions of American consumers have eaten chickens that were fed recalled tainted pet food, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) today announced that the risk to humans from eating poultry, eggs or pork from animals whose feed was supplemented with tainted pet food scraps is "very low" and is safe to eat. Also participating in the assessment were scientists from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The conclusions are the result of a safety/risk assessment conducted by the five federal agencies in an effort to estimate the risk to human health from exposure to melamine compounds. Scientists concluded that for consumers who eat large amounts of the foods in question the level of consumption is still 18,000 - 30,000 times lower than melamine levels that are considered safe. The assessment also noted that melamine is not metabolized, and is rapidly excreted in the urine. Thus, it is not believed to accumulate in the body of animals. |
